Preparing Students for Success Through Work-Based Learning

For many students, a first job can be both exciting and intimidating. Through Goodwill Industries of Mississippi's Work-Based Learning Program, students gain the experience, confidence, and skills they need to take that important first step into the workforce.

This summer, we celebrated another group of students who successfully completed the program at our Byram, Clinton, Crossgates, Greenville, and Hattiesburg locations.

In partnership with local school districts and the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services (MDRS), the Work-Based Learning Program provides students with hands-on experience in a real workplace while helping them develop essential employability skills. Participants learn far more than job-specific tasks—they build confidence, improve communication, strengthen teamwork, practice problem-solving, and gain an understanding of workplace expectations that will serve them throughout their careers.

Throughout their time at Goodwill, students work alongside experienced team members in our retail stores, gaining valuable experience in customer service, merchandising, organization, and daily operations. More importantly, they learn what it means to be part of a team while discovering their own strengths and abilities.

The success of the program would not be possible without the dedication of our store managers and employees who mentor, encourage, and support each student along the way. Their willingness to share their knowledge and create a welcoming learning environment helps transform a training opportunity into a meaningful experience.

Congratulations to all of our Work-Based Learning graduates! We are proud of what you've accomplished and look forward to seeing all that you achieve in the future.

At Goodwill, we're committed to creating opportunities that prepare individuals for meaningful employment—because when people are given the chance to learn, grow, and succeed, entire communities benefit.
