Goodwill of Mississippi proudly launched its BookWorks program in Greenville, Mississippi, at the Fulwiler & Garrett Hall Head Start/Early Head Start Center — marking an exciting new chapter in the organization’s mission to transform lives through lifelong learning and meaningful work.
The event brought together community partners, city leaders, and special guests to celebrate the joy of reading with local preschoolers. Among those in attendance were Mayor Errick Simmons, Vice Mayor Lurann Thomas Kingdom, Miss Mississippi Volunteer Mattie Grace Morris, and Mississippi’s own Steve Azar, who performed his song/book “One Mississippi” for more than 70 excited preschoolers.
“Seeing those children light up as Steve sang and Maddie Grace shared in the experience was truly special,” said Brad Steffani, President & CEO of Goodwill of Mississippi. “Our goal with BookWorks is to help children discover a lifelong love of reading — and today was a perfect example of that mission in action.”
The BookWorks program is designed to promote early literacy by connecting volunteers and community partners with young learners. Each participating child receives a brand-new book to take home, helping them build their own library and encouraging families to read together.
The Greenville launch marks an important milestone as Goodwill of Mississippi expands its literacy efforts into the Delta region, made possible through dedicated community support and the hard work of the BookWorks team, led by BookWorks Manager Tammy Louvier and Coordinator Cindy Miers.
“It takes a village to make events like this possible,” said Tammy Louvier. “We’re grateful for our partners, our volunteers, and everyone who helped us bring the BookWorks experience to Greenville. This is just the beginning.”
Through programs like BookWorks, Goodwill of Mississippi continues to invest in the future — one book, one child, and one community at a time.
